Nearly 6,000 Migrants Arrive in Crete as Eastern Mediterranean Route Heats Up

Wednesday, 3 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
As of mid-2026, nearly 6,000 migrants have arrived on the island of Crete, making it one of the more active arrival points in the eastern Mediterranean this year. Most arrivals have been recorded along the southern and eastern coastlines. Greek coast guard and local authorities are managing reception and processing at dedicated facilities away from main tourist areas. Tourists visiting Crete are unlikely to encounter any direct disruption to their travels, as popular destinations such as Heraklion, Chania, and Elounda remain unaffected. Visitors should be aware that some beaches in remote southern areas may occasionally have an increased official presence. Normal travel, accommodation, and tourism services continue to operate as expected across the island.
