Back to newsSt Spyridon College, an Australian Greek Orthodox school, is commemorating the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, one of World War II's most significant airborne assaults. The battle took place in May 1941, when German paratroopers invaded Crete in Operation Mercury. Allied forces, alongside Cretan civilians, mounted fierce resistance before the island fell after ten days of intense fighting. The anniversary falls this month, May 2026. Visitors to Crete can connect with this history at several sites across the island, including the Battle of Crete Museum in Heraklion, the German War Cemetery at Maleme near Chania, and the Allied War Cemetery at Souda Bay. The Chania region, where much of the fighting occurred, hosts annual commemorations each May that are open to the public.
