Crete swelters under 30°C as meltemi winds stir choppy seas

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete is experiencing northerly winds today alongside temperatures reaching around 30°C. The meltemi-type northerly breeze, known locally as voriades, will provide some relief from the heat but may make conditions choppy along exposed northern coastlines and ferry routes. Tourists planning boat trips or water activities should check with local operators before departing, as sea conditions can shift quickly under strong northerly winds. Inland areas and southern beaches will feel hotter with less wind. Stay hydrated, seek shade during midday hours between 12:00 and 16:00, and apply high-SPF sunscreen. Light, breathable clothing is recommended. Outdoor sightseeing at archaeological sites such as Knossos or Phaistos is best done in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat.
