Back to newsSnow has fallen across much of Greece, reaching as far south as Crete and the Cycladic island of Mykonos in an unusually widespread winter weather event. In Crete, higher-altitude areas including mountain villages and inland roads have been affected, with snow visible on the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and other elevated zones. Visitors planning to drive through mountain passes or visit highland destinations such as the Lasithi Plateau should check road conditions before departing, as some routes may be icy or temporarily closed. Coastal tourist areas and major cities like Heraklion and Chania are generally less affected, but temperatures are lower than seasonal averages. Carry an extra layer if travelling inland, and monitor local traffic authority announcements for road closures. The snowfall typically clears within one to two days at lower elevations.
