A wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Battle of Crete Memorial in Heraklion, honoring those who fought and died during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. The event is part of annual commemorations marking one of World War II's most significant airborne invasions, in which Allied forces and Cretan civilians resisted the German assault for ten days before the island fell. The Battle of Crete Memorial is located in Heraklion and is open to visitors year-round. Tourists interested in this chapter of Cretan history can also visit the Battle of Crete and National Resistance Museum in Heraklion, which documents the battle and the subsequent occupation. Each May, memorial events are held across the island, including in Chania near the main German military cemetery and the Allied War Cemetery at Souda Bay.
