Back to newsResidents of Arkalochori, a village in central Crete affected by the destructive September 2021 earthquake, have received a measure of justice after intervention by Greece's Ombudsman. For five years, earthquake victims reported delays and bureaucratic obstacles in receiving state compensation and support for rebuilding their homes and lives. The Ombudsman's office stepped in to address these systemic failures, prompting movement on long-stalled cases.
Arkalochori, located roughly 25 kilometers southeast of Heraklion, was one of the hardest-hit areas in the quake, which caused significant structural damage across the region. Many properties remain uninhabited or under repair.
For tourists, the village and surrounding area are accessible and generally safe to visit. Travelers interested in the recovery efforts or local resilience may find the area a meaningful stop when exploring the Heraklion regional unit.
