Greek MP Honors WWII Heraklion Airport Sabotage Heroes, 84 Years On

Friday, 12 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greek MP Lefteris Avgenakis attended a commemoration ceremony honoring the heroes of the historic sabotage at Heraklion Airport, marking 84 years since the operation took place. During World War II, resistance fighters carried out a sabotage mission at what is now Heraklion International Airport, a significant act of defiance during the Axis occupation of Crete. The annual memorial event recognizes those who risked their lives in this operation. Visitors interested in Cretan wartime history can explore related exhibits at the Heraklion Historical Museum and the Battle of Crete Museum, which document the island's resistance during the occupation. The Heraklion Airport itself, named Nikos Kazantzakis, continues to operate normally and serves as the main entry point for tourists arriving in central Crete.
