The man, part of an organized hiking group, got into difficulty on the trail and could not continue under his own power. The Fire Service responded quickly and successfully extracted him from the gorge. He was transferred to hospital for treatment.
The Agia Irini Gorge is a popular hiking destination in the White Mountains, offering a 7.5 km trail through dramatic scenery. It draws large numbers of visitors each season.
Hikers planning to tackle this or other Cretan gorges should carry sufficient water, wear sturdy footwear, and inform someone of their intended route.
