The Samaria Gorge in Chania will be open this Sunday, May 24, accessible from both entrances. The Organization for the Natural Environment and Climate Change confirmed the opening after reviewing updated weather forecasts, which showed conditions suitable for safe passage through the gorge. Samaria is one of the longest gorges in Europe at approximately 16 kilometers, located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of western Crete. It is a top destination for hikers visiting the island, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each season. The gorge typically runs from the plateau of Omalos down to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where visitors board a boat to reach Hora Sfakion or Sougia. Tourists planning to hike on Sunday should wear sturdy shoes, carry water, and start early. Check the official gorge website or local tour operators for current entry times and ticket information.
