On the evening of Wednesday, May 27, 2026, fire services in Heraklion, Crete, were called out shortly after 9 PM following reports of smoke rising near a Roma settlement in the area. Firefighting crews responded promptly to assess the situation. Based on the available information, the incident appears to have been contained without major escalation. The location is on the outskirts of the city and is not a tourist area, so visitors staying in or passing through Heraklion were not directly affected. No road closures or disruptions to central Heraklion were reported. Tourists in the area should be aware that emergency response times in Crete are generally efficient. If you notice smoke or fire anywhere on the island, contact the Greek fire service by dialing 199.
