The BOAK is the main east-west road connecting Chania to the rest of western Crete, and the Tavronitis junction serves as a key exit point for villages and beaches along the southwestern coast. Drivers using this route at night should exercise extra caution, reduce speed when approaching the junction, and ensure their vehicle headlights are in good working order. Tourists renting cars and travelling after dark toward areas such as Kolymvari, Paleochora, or the Samaria Gorge trailhead are advised to plan routes carefully and allow additional time for night driving on this stretch.
