Greece's €1.5M Battle Against Deadly Invasive Pufferfish in Crete

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete is the launch site for a new 1.5 million euro government program targeting the lagocephalus, an invasive and highly toxic pufferfish species that has spread throughout Greek and Mediterranean waters. The silver-cheeked toadfish poses a serious health risk as its flesh and organs contain a powerful poison with no known antidote. The program aims to monitor, reduce, and manage the species through coordinated fishing and research efforts. Tourists visiting Crete should be aware that lagocephalus is strictly banned from sale and consumption in Greece. If you see it offered at a fish market or restaurant, do not buy or eat it. When swimming or snorkeling, the fish is not aggressive, but avoid handling any unfamiliar species caught or spotted near the shore.
