Island Overview
Every location across Crete reports clear skies and zero precipitation on 28 July 2026. From Chania in the west to Sitia in the far east, the pattern is consistent: full sun, dry air, and afternoon highs between 30.6°C and 34.9°C. Overnight lows will stay above 21°C across the island and above 27°C on the south coast, so there is no cooling window after dark.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north shore runs noticeably cooler than the south today. Heraklion peaks at 31.3°C, Chania at 31.8°C, Rethymno at 30.7°C. Winds on the north coast stay between 10 and 17 km/h, light enough to be a comfort rather than a nuisance.
The south coast is a different environment. Ierapetra reaches 34.4°C and Makrigialos hits 34.9°C, the highest reading on the island today. Wind at Ierapetra peaks at 22.5 km/h, the strongest in today's data. The east-west mountain spine acts as a barrier, trapping warm air over the Libyan Sea coast through the afternoon. Morning beach visits are the practical choice on the south coast.
Mountain Areas
The White Mountains above Chania, Psiloritis in the centre, and the Dikti range above Lassithi offer meaningful cooling at altitude. Conditions are dry and sunny at the trailheads. Hikers in the Samaria Gorge should start before 08:00 and carry at least two litres of water per person.
Sea, Wind and UV
The sea is calm across the island. Wave heights range from 0.18 m at Rethymno to 0.58 m off Chania and Sitia, negligible for swimmers and snorkellers alike. Sea surface temperatures sit between 25.4°C at Makrigialos and 27.1°C at Heraklion, warm at every point along the coast.
UV index values are between 8.2 and 8.5 today, placing them in the very high category. Unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes between 11:00 and 16:00. Apply SPF 30 or higher before going out and reapply after every swim.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent island-wide. Flat seas, warm water, and no rain make every beach suitable today. The calmest water is at Rethymno (0.18 m max wave). Hersonissos, Malia, and Elounda are also near-flat. The afternoon wind at Ierapetra (22.5 km/h) may add some chop on the south coast, but conditions remain comfortable for swimming.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you are visiting the south coast today, time your beach session for before 10:30 or after 17:30. The 3 to 4 degree gap between north and south coast temperatures feels considerably larger at midday in direct sun with a dry southerly wind. Ierapetra and Makrigialos are worth the drive, but both are far more comfortable at the edges of the day. Between noon and 17:00, a shaded terrace and a cold drink is the better call.
