Island Overview
Crete is dry across all regions on 5 June 2026. High temperatures range from 24.8°C in Ierapetra to 27.1°C in Heraklion, while overnight lows sit between 17 and 20°C island-wide. No precipitation is expected anywhere today. The overall feel is warm and settled, consistent with early June on the island.
West Clear, East Overcast
The clearest skies today belong to the western end of the island. Chania reports a clear sky with a high of 26.2°C, and Rethymno is mainly clear at 25.4°C. Further east, the picture changes. Heraklion, Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, Sitia, Ierapetra, and Makrigialos are all under overcast conditions. Hersonissos and Malia, midway along the north coast, sit at partly cloudy. One important note: the cloud cover across the east is not thick enough to reduce UV significantly at ground level. The UV index sits at 8 or above everywhere on the island regardless of sky conditions.
Mountain Areas
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno benefit from the clearer western skies. Hikers on the Samaria Gorge or higher-altitude trails can expect good visibility today. Temperatures at altitude will run 8 to 10 degrees below coastal readings. Winds are light in those corridors, making morning excursions comfortable before midday heat builds on exposed ridges.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 21.1°C off Ierapetra to 23.0°C at Heraklion. Wave heights are low to very calm across most of the island: Rethymno and Ag. Nikolaos see waves under 0.35 metres, and Elounda and Sitia are similarly flat. Chania is the most exposed today at 0.8 metres, a manageable swell but worth accounting for with young children or inflatable equipment. Winds peak at 19.2 km/h in Heraklion and drop below 13 km/h across the south coast. UV index values reach 8.1 to 8.4 island-wide, classified as very high. At this level, unprotected fair skin can burn in under 30 minutes around midday.
Swim Verdict
Good swimming conditions on all coasts today. Water is warm enough for comfortable bathing everywhere, wave heights are low across most of the island, and there is no rain or hazardous wind. The calmest bathing spots are Rethymno, Ag. Nikolaos, and Elounda, where waves stay below 0.4 metres and sea temperatures sit between 22.5 and 22.8°C. Chania beaches are perfectly swimmable but expect a bit of movement in the water.
Practical Tip for Today
Do not treat overcast skies as sun protection. Across the eastern half of Crete, cloud cover today is thin and does nothing meaningful to reduce UV exposure. The UV index of 8 applies whether you are on a sunny Chania beach or under grey skies in Heraklion. Apply SPF 30 or higher before going outside, reapply after swimming, and plan shade breaks between 11:00 and 16:00 if you are spending a full day outdoors.
