Island Overview
Crete on 28 May 2026 is a grey-bright day rather than a full-sun one. A widespread layer of cloud sits over most of the island from end to end, but temperatures remain pleasant, with highs ranging from 23.7°C at Ierapetra to 25.5°C at Chania. Rain is absent almost everywhere: the only exception is Makrigialos on the far southeastern coast, where 1.3 mm of light precipitation is forecast. No heat stress, no storms, just a mild late-May day under diffuse light.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast from Chania through Rethymno, Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Malia is fully overcast through most of the day, with partial clearing at Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Malia providing the brightest spells on the island. Chania records the warmest overnight low at 19.8°C, while Heraklion drops to 15.6°C, a difference that reflects local topography and sea exposure. Highs across the north cluster tightly between 23.9°C and 25.5°C.
The south and southeast coasts at Ierapetra, Makrigialos, Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia are also overcast. Ierapetra carries the strongest winds of the day at 16.4 km/h and, along with Makrigialos, the most active wave state on the island. Conditions are not rough but noticeably livelier than the north.
Mountain Conditions
Coastal overnight lows of 15 to 20°C point to temperatures well below 10°C on the White Mountains above Chania and on Mount Ida above Rethymno and Heraklion. Cloud is expected to persist at altitude through the morning at minimum. Anyone planning a gorge walk or mountain excursion should carry a warm layer and expect limited visibility on the upper slopes.
Sea State, Wind, and UV
Seas are calm to very calm along the north and east coasts. Wave heights at Heraklion, Rethymno, Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, Hersonissos, and Malia reach no more than 0.22 to 0.26 m, essentially flat water. Chania is slightly more active at 0.46 m. Ierapetra and Makrigialos on the south coast see the largest swell today at 0.56 m, with wind peaks of 16.4 km/h and 9.9 km/h respectively. Winds elsewhere are light, at 11 to 14 km/h island-wide.
Sea temperatures sit between 20.2°C off Sitia and 21.5°C at Chania, with most of the island between 20.6°C and 21.1°C. The UV index peaks between 8.05 and 8.4 island-wide, placing today firmly in the very high category. Overcast skies scatter rather than block UV: radiation reaches the skin almost as effectively as under a clear sky.
Swim Verdict
Good conditions for swimming on the north and east coasts. The water is calm, sea temperatures are comfortable at around 21°C, and beaches will be quieter than on a clear day. Avoid south-facing beaches at Ierapetra and Makrigialos if flat water is a priority; the swell at 0.56 m is not dangerous but will be felt in the water. Chania's sea at 0.46 m is fine for confident swimmers.
Practical Tip for the Day
Apply SPF 30 or higher before going out, even if the sky looks grey. A UV index of 8 or above cuts through cloud cover with minimal reduction and will burn unprotected skin faster than the overcast conditions suggest. Reapply after every swim and do not skip protection because the sun is hidden.
