Two Earthquakes Strike Southeastern Crete; Tourists Unaffected

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Two earthquakes struck the southeastern coast of Crete in quick succession. The first measured magnitude 4.6, followed by a stronger 4.6 tremor reaching magnitude 5.3. Southeastern Crete, which includes areas around Sitia and Ierapetra, is a seismically active region and minor to moderate earthquakes are common throughout Greece. For tourists visiting the island, there is no immediate cause for concern. Cretan buildings, particularly hotels and public structures, are constructed to meet earthquake safety standards. If you feel a tremor, move away from windows, take cover under a sturdy table or doorframe, and wait for the shaking to stop before exiting any building. No damage or injuries have been reported at this time. Greek authorities and local civil protection services monitor seismic activity continuously. Travelers should follow official guidance if further updates are issued.
