Four Cretan Cities Advance EU-Backed Sustainable Urban Development

Friday, 15 May 2026/Tornos News/1
Four major Cretan cities are moving forward with Sustainable Urban Development strategies funded through the Crete 2021-2027 EU regional program. Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos are each implementing Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) plans, which were reviewed at a regional coordination meeting in Heraklion. These plans direct EU funding toward urban regeneration, green infrastructure, mobility improvements, and public space upgrades across the island's main cities. For visitors, the projects may bring improved pedestrian zones, better public transport connections, and upgraded cultural and waterfront areas in the coming years. Construction activity and temporary disruptions are possible in city centers as works progress. Travelers planning to visit these cities should allow extra time when navigating older districts. Completion timelines align with the broader 2021-2027 EU funding cycle.
