Museum Reveals Rare Ancient Burial: Boy and Dog Interred Together in Crete

Archaeologists at the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna in Crete have unveiled a newly exhibited jar burial (pithos burial) dating to antiquity. The burial contains the remains of a young boy and his dog, interred together, offering a rare and personal glimpse into ancient Cretan life and the bond between humans and animals thousands of years ago. The Museum of Ancient Eleutherna is located near Rethymno, in central-northern Crete, adjacent to the ongoing excavation site at ancient Eleutherna. It is open to the public and considered one of the finest archaeological museums on the island. Visitors interested in Minoan and post-Minoan Cretan civilization will find this new exhibit particularly compelling. The burial is on public display for the first time.
