Back to newsA collection of folk stories and oral accounts from the German Occupation of Crete, dating to May 1941, has been published in the traditional dialect of western Crete. The stories originate from the Apokoronas region, a mountainous inland area of Chania prefecture known for its strong resistance heritage during World War II. The accounts capture everyday Cretan life under Occupation through local humor and vernacular language, preserving cultural memory in an authentic way. Visitors interested in this period can explore related history at the Battle of Crete Museum in Chania and the villages of the Apokoronas valley, which retain their wartime character. The area is accessible by car, about 30 to 40 minutes southeast of Chania city. Several local communities also hold annual memorial events each May marking the 1941 Battle of Crete anniversary.
