Back to newsThe Cretan Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis has announced a significant funding package under Greece's National Development Program 2026-2030. Each municipality across Crete will receive 2 million euros for local infrastructure and services, while a separate 100 million euro allocation has been earmarked specifically for road safety improvements across the island.
The road safety investment is particularly relevant for visitors, as Crete's road network, especially in rural and mountainous areas, has historically presented challenges for drivers unfamiliar with local conditions. Upgrades are expected to include safer road surfaces, improved signage, and better lighting on key routes.
The funding program, described as a lifeline for regional governments, aims to address long-standing infrastructure gaps. Travelers renting cars or driving between destinations such as Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Lasithi may see gradual improvements to road conditions as projects roll out through 2030.
