An earthquake has struck Crete, prompting authorities to evacuate the Samaria Gorge, one of the island's most popular natural attractions. At the time of the evacuation order, 566 people were inside the gorge. The Samaria Gorge, located in the White Mountains of western Crete, is a 16-kilometre hiking trail and a UNESCO-listed site that draws thousands of visitors each year. Following the seismic event, officials moved quickly to clear the gorge as a precautionary safety measure. Tourists planning to hike the gorge should check with local authorities or their accommodation before heading to the trailhead, as access may remain restricted while assessments are carried out. Updates are expected from the Samaria Gorge National Park management. Stay informed through local news sources or your tour operator before visiting.
