Greek-American Family Reconnects with Roots in Crete

Sunday, 21 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A Greek-American family from New York recently made a roots journey to Azogires, a traditional village in the Selino region of southwestern Crete. John Kokozakis and his family traveled to the village to connect with their ancestral homeland, where they were welcomed by local resident Eftychios Koukoutsakis. Azogires is a quiet, well-preserved mountain village near Paleochora, known for its ancient plane trees, a small natural history museum, and Byzantine-era hermit caves. Visitors interested in authentic Cretan village life can reach Azogires from Paleochora in about 15 minutes by car. The village offers a glimpse into rural Cretan heritage and is suitable as a half-day detour when exploring the Selino area on the southwestern coast.
