Woman drowns at Crete beach; authorities warn swimmers of safety risks

Friday, 19 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A woman drowned at a beach in Crete in the latest of several drowning incidents recorded this season on the island. Authorities responded to the scene, but the woman could not be saved. Drownings remain a serious concern along Cretan beaches during the summer months, particularly at unsupervised or remote locations. Tourists are strongly advised to swim only at beaches with a lifeguard on duty, to observe posted water safety flags, and to avoid entering the sea alone or in rough conditions. Red or yellow flags indicate dangerous or caution-required conditions and should be respected. Children should be supervised at all times near the water. If you witness someone in distress at sea, call the Greek Coast Guard immediately at 108.
