Back to newsThe municipality of Heraklion is taking action against illegal parking across the city's streets. The Technical Service has begun installing boundary markers and physical barriers at problem spots to prevent vehicles from blocking roads, pavements, and access points. The initiative targets areas where illegal parking regularly causes congestion and disruption, particularly in busy central districts.
For visitors, this means some previously informal parking spots along Heraklion's streets may now be physically blocked off. Tourists driving rental cars should use designated car parks and marked parking zones rather than stopping wherever space appears available. Fines for illegal parking are enforced, and vehicles may be towed. The city center has several paid parking facilities near the port and main squares. When in doubt, look for blue-painted kerbs indicating paid parking or white-painted zones for free parking with time limits.
