Back to newsA 67-year-old French tourist was successfully rescued from the Agia Irini Gorge, located in the Kantanos-Selino municipality near Chania, after getting into difficulty during a hike. The man was part of a walking group whose members raised the alarm with local authorities, allowing rescue teams to reach and evacuate him safely.
The Agia Irini Gorge is a popular trekking destination in southwestern Crete, offering an approximately 7.5 km trail through dramatic limestone scenery. While the route is well-marked and accessible to most fitness levels, it involves uneven terrain and can be demanding in warm weather.
Hikers planning to visit the gorge should wear sturdy footwear, carry sufficient water, and inform someone of their planned route and estimated return time. Attempting the trail in a group and keeping a charged mobile phone is strongly advised.
