Back to newsTwo earthquakes struck off the coast of Gavdos, the small island located approximately 50 kilometers south of the Crete's southwestern tip. The stronger tremor measured 5.3 on the Richter scale, followed by a 4.6 magnitude aftershock. Gavdos is the southernmost point of Europe and is accessible by ferry from Paleochora and Hora Sfakion on Crete's south coast.
Earthquakes in this area of the Mediterranean are relatively common due to active fault lines beneath the sea. Greek authorities have not reported any injuries, structural damage, or tsunami warnings in connection with these tremors.
Tourists currently visiting Crete or planning to travel to Gavdos should monitor local announcements and ferry operator updates, as sea conditions and port operations can occasionally be affected following seismic activity. No immediate disruptions to travel have been reported.
