Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The municipality of Viannos, located in the southeastern part of the Heraklion regional unit, is drawing growing interest from visitors for its rich collection of historical and cultural monuments. The area is home to Byzantine churches, Venetian-era ruins, and sites tied to the Cretan resistance during World War II, including memorials commemorating the 1943 Viannos Massacre. The village of Ano Viannos serves as the main hub, offering access to several of these heritage sites within a short driving distance. Visitors can explore traditional stone architecture, medieval chapels with well-preserved frescoes, and scenic mountain landscapes along the way. The area is accessible by car from Heraklion in approximately 1.5 hours via the southern coastal road. Entry to most sites is free, and local signage guides visitors between key points of interest.
