The eastern Mediterranean's geography and climate patterns make the region particularly vulnerable to prolonged heatwaves, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C during summer months. Coastal areas and inland valleys can experience significantly different heat levels, with interior regions of Crete such as the Messara Plain and areas around Heraklion facing the most intense conditions. Tourists should plan outdoor activities, including archaeological site visits and hiking, for early morning before 10:00 or late afternoon after 17:00. Stay hydrated, carry water at all times, wear light clothing and sun protection, and seek air-conditioned spaces during midday hours.
