Elafonissi Beach: Crete's Iconic Pink-Sand Paradise Awaits Summer Visitors

Elafonissi, one of Crete's most iconic beaches, is currently offering visitors a refreshing escape from the summer heat. Located on the southwestern tip of the island in the Chania regional unit, Elafonissi is renowned for its shallow turquoise lagoon and distinctive pink-tinged sand, caused by crushed shells and coral fragments. The beach is accessible as a small island connected to the mainland by a shallow sandbar that visitors can wade across on foot. Tourists planning a visit should arrive early in the day, as Elafonissi draws large crowds during peak summer months and parking can be limited. The site is protected as a Natura 2000 area, so visitors are asked to avoid disturbing the natural environment. Basic facilities including tavernas and sunbed rentals are available on site. The drive from Chania city takes approximately 75 minutes via the southern coastal road.
