Crete Beach Object Identified as Missile Remnant, Not Naval Mine

Tuesday, 26 May 2026/SourceGreek Reporter/1 min read
A metallic object discovered on a rocky beach in eastern Crete was initially reported to authorities as a potential naval mine, prompting a security response. Greek defense sources subsequently identified the object as a remnant from a fired missile used by the Hellenic Armed Forces during military exercises, not an active threat. The area was assessed by security personnel before being declared safe. Such remnants occasionally wash ashore near zones used for military training in the eastern Mediterranean. For tourists visiting eastern Crete, there is no ongoing safety concern related to this incident. However, if you encounter any unfamiliar metallic or unusual objects on beaches or in coastal areas, do not approach or touch them. Contact local authorities or the coastguard immediately. Greek emergency services respond quickly to such reports, and beaches are regularly monitored throughout the tourist season.
