Back to newsThe Diktaean Cave (Diktaio Antro), located on the Lasithi Plateau in eastern Crete, is reopening to visitors following a renovation period. Known in Greek mythology as the birthplace of Zeus, the cave is one of Crete's most significant archaeological and cultural sites. The mayor of Oropedio municipality confirmed the reopening on local television, indicating the site has undergone improvements to enhance the visitor experience. The cave sits at around 1,025 metres altitude near the village of Psychro and is accessible by foot or donkey from the car park below. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the path and interior surfaces are uneven and can be slippery. No specific reopening date was detailed in the announcement, so tourists are advised to check locally before making the trip up to the plateau.
