Back to newsThe BOAK, Crete's main east-west highway connecting Heraklion to the eastern and western parts of the island, has been flagged as needing urgent vegetation pruning along sections of the route. Overgrown roadside vegetation can reduce visibility for drivers, particularly at curves and junctions, posing a safety concern during the busy tourist season. Authorities are calling for immediate trimming work to be carried out. Tourists renting cars and driving along the BOAK should exercise extra caution, keep speeds appropriate, and stay alert at exits and intersections where overgrowth may obscure sightlines. The highway is a key artery for reaching popular destinations including Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia in the east, as well as Rethymno and Chania to the west.
