Thousands Break Through Police at Crete NATO Base

Sunday, 17 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Thousands of people in Crete broke through police barriers and marched toward Souda Bay NATO military base, according to local news outlet Imerodromos. Souda Bay, located on the northwestern coast near Chania, is one of the largest NATO naval bases in the Mediterranean. The demonstration drew large crowds who pushed past security cordons set up by police. Protests at or near the base are not uncommon, often organized by political groups opposing foreign military presence in Greece. Visitors in the Chania region should be aware that such events can cause temporary road closures or traffic disruptions on routes between Chania city and the Akrotiri peninsula. If traveling in that area, allow extra time and check local traffic conditions before heading out.
