A case of meningitis has been confirmed at a vocational high school (EPAL) in Crete. Health authorities have ordered the school to remain closed while contact tracing and preventive measures are carried out. Meningitis is a bacterial or viral infection causing inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This incident is localized to the school environment and poses no direct risk to tourists visiting the island. Travelers should nonetheless follow standard hygiene practices, avoid close contact with visibly ill individuals, and seek medical attention promptly if they experience symptoms such as severe headache, stiff neck, fever, or sensitivity to light. Medical facilities are available across the island, including in Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno.
