Back to newsThe Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest and most visited gorges, reopens to the public on Tuesday, May 19. The gorge will be accessible from both entrances: Xyloskalo in the White Mountains above Omalos, and Agia Roumeli on the southern coast. The announcement was made by OFYPEKA, the Greek Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, which manages the national park.
The gorge stretches approximately 16 kilometers through the Samaria National Park in the Chania regional unit. Hikers typically walk from north to south, starting at Xyloskalo (1,230 meters elevation) and finishing at Agia Roumeli, where boats connect to Hora Sfakion and Paleochora. The route takes 4 to 7 hours depending on pace. Wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and start early to avoid midday heat.
