Police Warn of Phone Scam Targeting Rethymno Residents

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Authorities in Rethymno are investigating a phone scam in which a 58-year-old woman was deceived by a caller posing as a police officer. The fraudster convinced her that hiding her cash and valuables outside her home was necessary for her safety. The items were then stolen by the scammer or an accomplice. Police are reminding residents and visitors to be alert to unsolicited phone calls in which strangers request money, jewelry, or personal items under the pretense of security or legal procedures. Legitimate police officers will never ask you to move or hand over valuables by phone. If you receive such a call while in Crete, hang up and contact the local police directly on the emergency number 100. Do not act on instructions from unknown callers claiming to be law enforcement.
