Two Strong Earthquakes Strike Gavdos, South of Crete

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Two earthquakes struck the area near Gavdos, a small island south of Crete, with both measuring above 5.0 on the Richter scale. Gavdos lies approximately 65 kilometers south of the Sfakia region in southern Crete. Seismic activity of this magnitude is not uncommon in this part of the Aegean, as Crete sits in one of Europe's most active earthquake zones. Earthquakes centered near Gavdos are typically felt across southern Crete, including the Heraklion and Lasithi regions, though at reduced intensity. At this time, no damage or injuries have been reported. Tourists currently on Crete should be aware that minor aftershocks may follow. If you feel strong shaking, move away from buildings and seek open ground. Ferry services to and from Gavdos should be checked for any schedule disruptions before travel.
