5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Turkey, Mild Tremors Felt in Crete

Wednesday, 20 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Turkey earlier today, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. The tremor was felt across several areas in the region. While the epicenter was located in Turkey, earthquakes of this size in the eastern Mediterranean can occasionally be felt as mild shaking in parts of Crete, particularly in the eastern areas of the island. No damage or injuries in Crete have been reported in connection with this event. Tourists currently on the island can continue their plans as normal. If you feel ground tremors during your stay, move away from windows, stay calm, and follow guidance from local authorities. Crete sits in a seismically active zone, so minor tremors are not uncommon and rarely pose a risk to visitors.
