Back to newsA fire broke out in an olive grove near the village of Asimi, in the Heraklion regional unit of central Crete, at around 1:30 PM. The Fire Service responded quickly, deploying four firefighters and two vehicles to bring the blaze under control. Olive grove fires are not uncommon in Crete during dry, windy periods, particularly in summer months when vegetation is parched. The incident did not affect major tourist areas or road access in the region. Visitors traveling through the Heraklion interior should remain alert to the possibility of roadside smoke and follow any temporary detour signs if local authorities redirect traffic. If you spot a fire while in Crete, call the emergency number 199 to reach the Fire Service directly. Always carry water when hiking inland during hot weather.
