Crete Marks 85-Year Anniversary of WWII Invasion and Fierce Resistance

Each year in late May, Crete commemorates the Battle of Crete (Machi tis Kritis), one of the most significant events of World War II. In May 1941, German paratroopers launched a massive airborne invasion of the island, met by fierce resistance from Cretan civilians, Allied forces, and Greek soldiers. The battle lasted ten days and resulted in enormous casualties on both sides.
