Kos Reopens Three Historic Monuments Damaged in 2017 Earthquake

Saturday, 13 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Three historic monuments on the Greek island of Kos have been restored and officially reopened following damage sustained in the 2017 earthquake. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni inaugurated the Baptistery of Saint John, the Defterdar Mosque, and the Forum Gate in a ceremony marking the completion of works costing over 10 million euros. The three sites represent different layers of Kos's history, spanning early Christian, Ottoman, and ancient Roman periods. Visitors to Kos can now access these landmarks again. Note that this news concerns Kos, not Crete, though both islands are popular Aegean destinations. Travelers planning to visit historic sites in the region should check local opening hours, as recently restored monuments may have limited or seasonal access schedules.
