Loggerhead Turtles Drive Sustainable Tourism in Crete

Saturday, 13 June 2026/SourceCretan Magazine/1 min read
Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) have become a symbol of sustainable tourism in Crete, with thousands of visitors taking part in awareness activities organized by ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. These turtles nest on several Cretan beaches, particularly along the southern and northern coastlines, and their presence shapes how tourism is managed in sensitive areas during the summer months. Tourists visiting beaches such as Rethymno, Matala, and Kokkini Hani may encounter nesting zones marked with protective barriers. Visitors are asked to avoid these areas at night, keep beaches dark by limiting artificial lighting, and refrain from disturbing the sand. Joining an ARCHELON beach patrol or awareness session is a popular activity for eco-minded travelers. Check the ARCHELON website for volunteering opportunities and guided educational events available throughout the season.
