The turtle was discovered washed ashore by swimmers at the beach. Stavros is a popular destination for tourists, known for its sheltered bay and clear waters, and is located about 15 kilometers northeast of Chania city.
Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) are a protected species commonly found in Cretan waters. If you encounter a dead or injured turtle on any Cretan beach, do not touch it and report it immediately to ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, or contact local authorities. Tourists swimming or boating in Cretan waters are encouraged to watch for turtles and maintain a safe distance to avoid accidental harm.
