Toxic Pufferfish Surge Threatens Mediterranean Swimmers

Monday, 22 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Pufferfish have been spotted in increasing numbers across Mediterranean waters, including around Crete, prompting warnings for swimmers and beachgoers. These fish, which have migrated from warmer seas, carry tetrodotoxin in their organs, a potent poison with no antidote. While pufferfish rarely attack unprovoked, they can bite when handled or threatened, and their teeth are sharp enough to cause serious injury. Tourists are strongly advised not to touch or handle any pufferfish found in the water or washed up on beaches. Do not attempt to eat them under any circumstances, as their flesh can be lethal if improperly prepared. If you spot a pufferfish on a beach, keep children and pets away and alert local authorities. In case of a bite or suspected poisoning, seek medical attention immediately.
