Crete Reports First Domestic West Nile Case; No Reason for Alarm

Crete's Director of Public Health, Antonis Papadakis, has issued a reassuring statement following the detection of the first domestic West Nile Virus case in Greece this season. He confirmed that Crete is fully prepared and that there is no reason for alarm. West Nile Virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, not person-to-person contact. The vast majority of infected individuals experience no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. Serious illness is rare and primarily affects people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions. Tourists visiting Crete are advised to take standard mosquito precautions, particularly at dawn and dusk: use insect repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves and trousers in the evenings, and ensure accommodation has window screens or air conditioning. These simple measures significantly reduce any risk.
