Samaria Gorge Reopens: Crete's Stunning 16km Mountain Trail Now Open

Sunday, 21 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges and a top natural attraction in western Crete, is reopening tomorrow from both entrances. Located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of the Chania regional unit, the gorge stretches approximately 16 kilometers from the plateau of Omalos down to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. Access from both the northern entrance at Xyloskalo and the southern entrance at Agia Roumeli means visitors have full flexibility to hike one way and take the ferry to Hora Sfakion or Sougia. The trail typically takes 4 to 7 hours depending on pace. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and start early to avoid midday heat. Entrance fees apply and the gorge is managed by the White Mountains National Park authority.
