Cretan Rockrose and Carob Honey Receive Official Certification

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Researchers at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICH) have completed a study to identify and certify two distinctive types of honey produced in Western Crete: kalokeimithia (rockrose) honey and carob honey. Both varieties are harvested primarily in the Chania region and represent some of the most unique local products visitors can find on the island. The certification process establishes clear quality markers and geographic origin, making it easier for consumers to identify authentic Cretan honey. For tourists, this is good news: look for labelled rockrose and carob honey at local markets and specialty food shops around Chania. These honeys have a distinct flavour profile compared to thyme honey, the island's most famous variety, and make excellent, verifiable souvenirs directly tied to the Western Cretan landscape.
