Agia Irini Gorge opens as accessible hiking destination in Crete

The Agia Irini Gorge in western Crete officially opened for excursions in May 1996, marking it as an organized hiking destination for visitors. Located in the Selino region of Chania prefecture, the gorge offers a scenic trail through dramatic limestone formations and native vegetation. Unlike the more famous Samaria Gorge nearby, Agia Irini is generally considered less strenuous and more accessible, making it suitable for walkers of varying fitness levels. The trail runs approximately 7.5 kilometers one way, passing through a traditional village at its northern end where visitors can find refreshments. Hikers should wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and check seasonal conditions before setting out, as the gorge may be closed during winter months or after heavy rainfall. Organized tour groups and independent travelers regularly include it as a day trip from Chania or Paleochora.
