How do I get to Crete?+
Crete has two international airports: Heraklion (HER) in the east and Chania (CHQ) in the west. Direct flights connect most European capitals from March to November.
Which airport should I fly into?+
Fly into Heraklion for east and central Crete (Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Matala). Choose Chania for the west (Rethymno, Falassarna, Balos). Both have good summer connections.
Can I take a ferry from Athens?+
Yes, daily overnight ferries connect Piraeus to Heraklion and Chania (8-9 hours). Book early in summer. Cabins are comfortable and it is a great experience.

Getting Around
Do I need a car in Crete?+
Highly recommended. Crete is 260 km from east to west and the best beaches and villages are often remote. Rental cars cost 25-50 EUR/day in season.
Is the bus system reliable?+
KTEL buses connect major cities (Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania, Agios Nikolaos) frequently. Remote villages have fewer connections. Check schedules ahead of time.

Are the roads in good condition?+

Cretan cuisine is the foundation of the Mediterranean diet: olive oil, fresh vegetables, local cheese (graviera, mizithra), lamb, fish, and honey. Simple, fresh and exceptional.
