Leer la historia

The church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) in Argoulides is built in the 14th century, like the nearby temple of Saints Artemios and Paraskevi. The church bears frescoes from the 14th century and, together with the temples of Michael Archangel and the Annunciation in Vothonas plateau, they are the only churches of Akrotiri area that preserve frescoes.

In the murals we can see scenes from the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Martyrdom of Saint Catherine. Next to the temple there are two caves, large enough to accommodate people, which may have hosted monks.

During the German Occupation, the Germans built a large building for the surveillance of the surrounding area, which is preserved right next to the church. Then, the two caves were used for storing war material.
